MAGGIOLINO MY2030 - Classic Shape. Modern Soul.
The MAGGIOLINO MY2030 is an independent design study inspired by two different moments in the history of the Beetle: the original car that turned a simple mechanical object into one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the world, and the post-2000 reinterpretations that proved the idea could survive outside its original technical context.
This is not a replica, and it is not an attempt to replace any existing Volkswagen model. The intention is different: to ask what should remain when a familiar object is translated into another time.
For me, the answer is not the exact bodywork, not the mechanical layout, and not nostalgia for its own sake. What should remain is the idea — the arched roofline, the generous rounded fenders, the compact visual mass, the friendly but unmistakable identity, and the sense that the car can be immediately recognized from a distance without needing an aggressive grille or an excess of styling detail.
The proportions therefore remain intentionally simple and legible. The body is conceived as a two-door four-seat car with a strongly arched silhouette, rounded wheel arches and restrained brightwork. Chrome is used as punctuation rather than decoration: enough to recall the visual vocabulary of the historic car without turning the study into retro pastiche.
The design also avoids the temptation to reproduce the past literally. A contemporary reinterpretation should belong to its own technical era. For that reason, the MY2030 concept was imagined around a full-hybrid, automatic, front-wheel-drive architecture. This is a design direction rather than a validated engineering specification, but it expresses the central idea clearly: familiar character, contemporary use.
A modern Maggiolino should not need to pretend that 1960 never ended.
It should carry the emotional continuity of the original into a form that makes sense now.
Interior — Natural Material, Controlled Electronics
The same principle continues inside the car.
The cabin is imagined in a warm cream-beige palette, with soft surfaces, restrained metallic accents and a horizontal visual structure that keeps the interior calm rather than futuristic for its own sake. The intention is to preserve some of the warmth and familiarity associated with classic interiors while integrating the digital functions expected from a contemporary car.
The steering wheel remains visually substantial and recognizably automotive. It is not reduced to a decorative object or overloaded with touch-sensitive surfaces. Physical controls remain available where immediacy matters, so the driver does not need to enter a digital menu for every basic action.
A large central display provides navigation, media, vehicle information and connected functions, while a digital instrument cluster communicates the driving state directly in front of the driver. The screen is intentionally treated as a functional layer rather than as the dominant object in the cabin.
Below it, conventional physical controls remain for frequently used functions such as climate and essential vehicle settings. The objective is a deliberate balance between natural interaction and electronics: digital systems should extend the car's capabilities without making the interior feel like a tablet mounted inside a vehicle.
The automatic selector is equally intentional. A full-hybrid concept does not need a traditional manual transmission ritual, but it still benefits from a clear physical control that gives the driver an immediate sense of state and intention. The selector therefore remains visible and tactile instead of disappearing entirely into the interface.
In this interpretation, the full-hybrid automatic powertrain is part of the same design philosophy. The electric side of the system should make low-speed driving quieter, smoother and more efficient, while the combustion engine preserves range, flexibility and the familiarity of conventional refuelling. The point is not to make the car feel electronically detached from the driver, but to use electronics where they improve the experience and keep physical interaction where it still has value.
The result is meant to feel contemporary without becoming sterile: a cabin where software is present, but does not visually or ergonomically erase the car around it.

Emerald Pearl
The Emerald Pearl version was not chosen simply because green is attractive. It was chosen because this particular type of green works with the geometry of the car.
On a rounded body, emerald creates depth without making the surfaces visually heavy. In direct light it becomes vivid and almost jewel-like; in shadow it becomes darker, calmer and more mature. That change in character is important because the MY2030 is not intended to look playful in every circumstance.
The color gives the design an organic quality. It works with the curved fenders, the domed roof and the restrained chrome rather than competing with them. The result feels classic without looking historical, and distinctive without becoming theatrical.
The pearl effect is equally important. A flat green would describe the color itself. Emerald Pearl allows the light to describe the body.
That distinction became one of the central ideas of the study.

Silver Pearl
The Silver Pearl version takes the opposite approach.
Where Emerald Pearl adds emotional depth, Silver Pearl removes chromatic distraction. Silver is almost neutral, but not passive. On a body defined primarily by curvature, it makes reflections, highlights and transitions between surfaces easier to read.
In other words, silver lets the form speak.
This is why Silver Pearl became the second natural color for the project. It does not try to give the Maggiolino another personality. Instead, it reveals the one already contained in the shape.
The roof arc becomes clearer. The fenders become more sculptural. The relationship between glass, painted surfaces and chrome becomes more precise. Under changing light, the car can appear warmer or colder without losing its basic identity.
The result is less romantic than Emerald Pearl, but perhaps more architectural.

Two Colors, Two Readings
The two colors do not represent two different cars. They represent two different readings of the same form.
Emerald Pearl emphasizes character, warmth and individuality.
Silver Pearl emphasizes proportion, volume and light.
Other colors could certainly work, but during the development of the study these were the two that felt most natural to the shape. That is an important distinction. The objective was never to build a large color catalogue. The objective was to find the colors that seemed to belong to the design.
The same principle guided the rest of the project: form first, decoration second.
A recognizable idea does not need to be frozen in time in order to survive. It can change its technology, its materials and its details while preserving the visual and emotional logic that made it memorable in the first place.
That is the premise behind MAGGIOLINO MY2030.
Purists preserve the object. Designers preserve the idea.
