ContinuumPort Core Principles

Status: historical formulation (2025). These are the principles as first stated, and they are kept as first stated. They have since been carried further in Seven Principles: A Discipline for Working Intelligently with AI, where each is developed under adversarial pressure and several are named differently — Principle 5 most of all, which is stated here as a claim about where continuity resides and in the book as a claim about what a user infers. The divergences are deliberate and are explained in the book's preface: the principle is the object, the wording is the best statement of it that has survived so far. The book also reads them out of numerical order, so Principle 2 appears as its Chapter 4. Where the two differ, the book is the later reading; this page is the record of where it started.

  1. Model inference is ephemeral. Semantic meaning can be portable.
  2. We transport only intention and working state.
  3. We explicitly exclude identity, emotion, or persistent self-representation.
  4. We use the model as a tool, not as a mirror.
  5. Continuity resides in portable structure, not in the running model.
  6. The user is the sole real point of continuity.
  7. The tool is useful precisely to the extent that we know what not to ask of it.

No mysticism. No attachment. No anthropomorphism.

Technical Note: Inference vs. Semantic Meaning

Inference refers to the computational process by which an AI model generates responses:

  • Compute resources (GPU, memory) are temporarily allocated
  • Model weights and the current context are loaded
  • Token-by-token prediction is executed
  • Once the response is delivered, that computational instance disappears completely

Nothing remains "awake" or "waiting." Every interaction with the model is a temporary reconstruction, not a persistent entity.

Semantic meaning, however — the user's intent, objectives, task progress, and conversational direction — does not need to vanish with inference. It can be captured in a portable, user-controlled structure (as ContinuumPort does with .cp files) and resumed in another session, on another model, or on another device.

This distinction is the foundation of ContinuumPort.
